You Don't Need a Topic to Start Writing: Childhood Memories and the Journey from Village to Surat
For the past few days, I had this constant urge to 'write something.' But I couldn't find a topic, and to be honest, I still haven't found one. Today, while thinking about it, a question arose: is it really necessary to have a title before you start writing?
Anyway! I put all that overthinking aside and just started writing. So, in today's blog, let me write about my childhood memories.
Hometown, Family, and Friendship
I spent the first five years of my life in my native village (Karjala). I grew up under the loving shelter of my Ba, Bapa, Bhabha, Gaudha Maa, Vasantben, Chagandada, and Motaba. Being the youngest in our generation, I received immense love from everyone in the family.
As I grew a bit older, I started making friends in the neighborhood. One of my closest friends was Sandip Vadoriya. My father had brought a tricycle for me from a town called Jesar. Bringing a cycle home for a kid is a very emotional moment. Today, when I bought a cycle for my own daughters, I was instantly reminded of that childhood memory. Sandip used to come to my house to play. We would ride the cycle—sometimes he would steer while I pushed from behind, and sometimes I would ride while he pushed. Riding that tricycle was a joy like no other. The trouble started when its front part broke one day.
The First Day of School
Once, my father dropped me off at the village school to begin my education. And what followed? I cried so much that I brought the whole school down! I vaguely remember falling asleep right there in the classroom while crying (and the teacher was probably just happy that I finally went quiet! :p).
Childhood Thefts and Stubbornness
Back then in the villages, we used to get a mouth freshener called "Chutki". Seeing the elders eat it, I would crave it too. But I never had the courage to eat it in front of anyone, fearing a scolding. One morning, I took some money from my Ba and bought a "Chutki" from the shop right next to our house. I was hiding behind a chopped tree trunk, trying to open the packet, when the village priest spotted me. He told my father, who was just passing by on his bullock cart on his way to the farm. My father confiscated the Chutki and went to the farm. I cried a lot, fearing a severe scolding when he returned, but my Ba gave me money again and I went and bought another one.
Another such memory is of Monghi Maa, who lived right behind our house. One day, she brought slate pens for her kids. I was fascinated by them because they had blue and pink colors mixed in, whereas I had only ever seen plain white slate pens before. Monghi Maa gave me a tiny piece, which I completely used up by writing continuously. I asked my Ba and went back to Monghi Maa to ask for another pen. She scolded me and said, "Tell your dad to go to Jesar and get it for you!" I came back home crying.
Memories of the Farm and Nature
We spent most of our time at the farm.
- The Cycle Spoke and the Scar: Once, while walking back home from the farm, Hareshbhai or Arvindbhai gave me a lift on the back carrier of their bicycle. My left foot got caught in the rear wheel, and I still bear the scar on my foot today.
- Bhabha and Sugarcane: My Bhabha used to bring sugarcane from the farm and cut it into bite-sized pieces using a nutcracker. Going to the farm with him and picking fresh vegetables is still fresh in my memory. When Bhabha was home in the afternoons, it was my job to serve him tea. Once, my brother Rajesh was going to serve him tea and accidentally burned his hand.
- Walking in Ba's Shadow: During the scorching afternoons, I would carry lunch (Bhatu) to the farm for my Ba. When the sun was too harsh, she would tell me to walk in her shadow.
- Picnic at the Farm: Looking at weaver birds' nests in the acacia trees, and eating fresh jujubes (bor), guavas, mangoes, cucumbers, and corn right from the farm was a unique joy. The experience of eating a rustic meal of millet bread (rotlo), vegetables, buttermilk, and onions in the open fields—you just can't find that taste in today's meals.
Village Characters, Ramji Temple, and Home Environment
We had a Ramji temple in the village, where we went for the evening Aarti every day. Singing the Hanuman Chalisa after the Aarti was our daily routine. We would get chocolates as Prasad. The last time I visited the village with my daughters, I recorded a video there on my phone and realized how fast time flies! There was a man named Magan who used to come to this temple; he was slightly mentally unstable and seeing him always made us laugh.
Our house was always bustling with people. The farm laborers and partners (Bhagiya) would always eat at our house. Speaking of meals, everyone in the house would sit together for breakfast, and enjoying tea with Bhakhari was a delight. We had a buffalo, so we always got fresh milk. Since most family members were at the farm during the day, I mostly had to eat lunch alone. But the evening dinner was always eaten together with the entire family.
Once, I got some infection on my toe, and my father treated it by piercing a thread through it using a needle. My Bhabha also had an amazing skill. Whenever someone in the village suffered from an eye ailment called 'Ankh no Joko', they would come to him for a traditional cure.
There was a tempo driver in our village who looked a bit like a goon and always carried a knife, which he used to show to scare me. Almost 30 years later, he is still in the same place; there has been no progress in his life.
Unforgettable Childhood Incidents
- The 1994 Plague and Surat FM (101.1 MHz): During the 1994 plague, most of our relatives from Surat had relocated to the village. Devrajbhai had brought an FM radio from Surat (along with a toy piano for me). Surprisingly, we could catch the Surat FM frequency (101.1 MHz) in our village! They used to take song requests via phone calls. We had a landline at home, so I would try hard to call the station with the help of the elders.
- Chagandada and Old Cassettes: Our Chagandada loved listening to Bhajans. We had those old magnetic tape cassettes at home, and he would play them on a tape recorder. Looking back, that era feels completely extinct! First the cassettes disappeared, then came CDs, then pen drives, and now everything is on the internet.
- The Rabid Dog: Once, a rabid dog entered our village. I had gone with my Ba to get cotton oil pressed, and the dog bit her. The villagers teamed up to kill the dog, and my father went to dispose of it at the village outskirts.
- Riding a Buffalo Calf: I vividly remember playing by climbing onto a buffalo calf and holding its horns as if I was steering a car!
- The Vanishing Yellow Sparrows: During the monsoon, we used to see a lot of yellow-capped sparrows, which seem to have become extinct nowadays.
- The Pigtail and the Swing: Since childhood, the hair on the back of my head used to grow long like a pigtail, which Vasantben used to cut for me. During vacations, when my cousins from Surat visited, we would all gather and swing joyfully on the traditional wooden swing (Hindolo).
Memories of the Maternal Home (Fifad)
During my childhood, I used to visit my maternal home in Fifad. We had to go to Jesar first and then take a Savarkundla tempo to reach Fifad. The water in Fifad was very salty back then, so no matter how much fun I had, I never liked drinking the water there. My maternal grandfather, whom we affectionately called 'Aata', used to jokingly tell me, "Let's lay a water pipeline straight from your village Karjala to here!"
Once, when my Ba was seriously ill, my brother and I stayed in Fifad. Mukta Masi and everyone else were there to take care of us. The village had a large Muslim population, so watching the Tajiya processions was a unique experience. There were also religious ceremonies and Yagyas held in our maternal courtyard, creating a wonderful atmosphere.
Arrival in Surat and a New Beginning
All these memories are from the time before I turned five. After that, I moved to Surat for my education. My brother had already moved there before me and was living at Vallabhdada's house. Later, when we all moved to Surat, we started a joint family business. We began our life in Surat living in a single room and kitchen on the first floor... and from there, a new chapter of life began.
There must be countless other stories, but memories tend to fade with time. As I recall new ones, I will definitely keep updating this post.
With this, I also found the answer to my initial question—you don't need a topic to write; once you write something, the title finds its way automatically.
